Steve Yeager Young Filmmakers Workshop
[Younger children with prior YFW class experience or permission of the instructor may enroll.]
The Young Filmmakers Workshop presents a series of professional-level art and design, filmmaking, and performance courses that culminate in a red-carpet premiere of student films at Baltimore’s Charles Theater. The Young Filmmakers Workshop provides a hands-on, intensive environment where young people learn about the world of film and build basic to advanced-level skills under the guidance of working professionals. These workshops jump-start careers and provide portfolio-quality work for students wishing to pursue filmmaking, directing, visual design, or acting professions. Because of the specialized nature of the program, attendees should be prepared to live, breathe, and be totally immersed in the world of film, while having fun. Space is limited. Early application is recommended to guarantee a place in the workshop of your choice.
For all YFW Participants: Our fall premiere is underwritten by program sponsor ads. This tax-deductible expense is supported by student ad sales. Further information is provided upon enrollment.
Campers enrolled in any three weeks of Young Filmmakers Workshop may add one or more additional weeks of Discoveries in Art and Explorations in Science for $405 per week.

June 21 – July 09
Filmmaking
Students are trained in all aspects of the filmmaker’s craft and are rotated into each job of a working film crew including an opportunity to direct. Instruction covers beginning to intermediate elements, including lighting composition, camera movement, continuity, and directing, while shooting a short narrative feature film.
June 21 – July 09
Acting for the Camera
Taught by professional actors with strong dramatic training, Acting for the Camera covers the basics of character, motivation, script analysis, relationships, and more, using acting techniques including Meisner, Stanislavski, and Strasberg. Emphasis is on developing on-camera dramatic skills in an environment where each student is challenged to stretch his or her abilities. Students alternate between training, rehearsals, and shooting scenes for a short film.
June 21 – July 09
Production Design
This program is for those who love art, drawing, costuming, make-up, and visual design, and are interested in embarking upon or furthering their studies in filmmaking. Learn script analysis, design conception, location selection, character analysis, and more. Create props, sets, make-up, and costumes for the YFW films. The small size of this class allows us to tailor the course to each student’s ability and to provide a hands-on opportunity to engage in these processes from start to finish. Students spend the first week designing and building, and the second and third weeks applying their work to a narrative film. This is a unique opportunity for anyone who loves art, but doesn’t necessarily “color within the lines.”
June 21 – July 09
Graphic Design & Special Effects
Create distinctive technical effects while learning to unify a film’s visual elements. From credit sequences to computer-designed cinematography such as greenscreen, to posters and DVDs, students learn the technological visual production side of filmmaking using the industry’s top design software. This course is perfect for techies, gamers, and kids who want to learn how to apply their passion for technology. Students contribute to a narrative film shot in the second and third weeks, while working on independent and class projects.
July 12 – July 23
Digital Editing Lab
Photolab, After Effects, Pro Tools, and other Final Cut Pro programs. Taught by professional digital editors, the workshop offers students the chance to perfect their digital editing skills and learn creative narrative and documentary storytelling styles. Students should come to the workshop with tape or DVD materials, ready to edit into a completed film. They need their own digital camcorder for digitizing their films in the Final Cut Pro programs. Those who have not attended a prior YFW Documentary Film Lab are required to submit a sample of their work to Park Camps at P.O. Box 8200, Brooklandville, MD 21022. Enrollment is limited.
July 12 – July 23
Documentary Film Lab
This is a high-level class in which each student conceptualizes, shoots, and edits a short documentary film. A week is dedicated to editing the films and learning and using Final Cut Pro. This is a rare opportunity for the enthusiastic student to work in a specialized, individually tailored setting. Students need their own mini DV digital camcorder. Those who have not attended a prior YFW production course are required to submit a sample of their work on DVD or tape with their registration.
